HOURS OF OPERATION
Little Bear Home Childcare is open 8am to 4:30pm.
The childcare operates on a teacher schedule. The childcare is open full-time from the last week of August until the last week of June similar to the Halton District School Board.
Please see Tuition Schedule section below for exact dates.
The childcare is closed in July and August with the exception of the last week of August.
ATTENDANCE
Please arrange changes to your schedule at least 24 hours in advance. If you are unable to give advance notice, please email if your child will be earlier or later than their normal drop-off or pick-up time.
If you are unable to pick-up your child for any reason it is the parents responsibility to notify an alternate person. ALL persons other than the parent(s) will be required to show a valid form of photo identification.
Full fees are due on days children do not attend due to inclement weather or other unforeseen incidents such as traffic, car failure, appointments, illness, moving, or employment.
SUPPLIES
Parents are responsible for supplying diapers, wipes, diaper cream, baby food, formula, bottles, sunscreen, sunglasses (if desired), outdoor gear and any special toys/blankets your child may want in their crib or on their cot. Cots use regular crib size sheets.
Children are permitted to have pacifiers/soothers at nap time only (we can work up to this!).
Each child should bring a small bag to the childcare containing a few sets of seasonally appropriate extra clothes, extra socks, a hat, seasonal outdoor clothing or other relevant items. Bags will be returned to be re-stocked with appropriate clothing and items as needed. Parents will be notified by email of items that need refilling such as diapers or wipes.
INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSURE
The daycare will be closed when the Halton Public Elementary School Board is closed due to inclement weather.
CHILDREN IN CARE
Under the Child Care and Early Years Act (CCEYA) a maximum of 6 children are legally permitted in a licensed home childcare at any time regardless of the number of adults present in the household. Any child under the age of 13 is included in the maximum number of 6 children. Only 3 children may be under age 2 (24 months) at any time. Providers are required to include their own children under 4 years of age in the maximum number of children. The childcare currently accepts children from 12 months to 4 years of age.
DROP-OFF and PICK-UP
Children respond best when parents have a quick drop-off and pick-up routine (no more than 5 minutes). The longer a parent stays, the harder it is for all the children! A big smile, hug & kiss, and a few reassuring and positive words that the child will have a great day is all they need! Children are usually quick to become involved with the group and childcare activities as soon as the parent leaves.
If there are any special circumstances about your child when they are dropped-off in the morning (for example, they did not sleep well the night before or Grandma is coming for an exciting visit tonight) please briefly explain so the Educator can take this into consideration when caring for your child.
Please say good-bye! It is NEVER recommended to sneak out or leave without saying goodbye to your child. Please make sure they know you are leaving even if they act totally okay with it! A quick goodbye and a promise to pick them up at a time your child would understand (for example, after nap time or after snack) is great!
During drop-off and pick-up children will often test boundaries as they see two different authority figures and wonder which rules will apply. Children are expected to adhere to the regular rules during these times.
Safety is always a primary concern. During pick-up, please note that children are NEVER allowed to go outside unattended and it is expected that children will not leave the house without the parent right with them. Once a child has gone outside, they are the responsibility of the parent picking them up. If pick-up occurs while all the children are outside, please ensure a speedy transition.
Please note we may be at the pond across the street or on a short walk around the crescent when you arrive to pick-up your child. We will arrive back shortly!
COMMUNICATION
Comments and suggestions are always welcome regarding your child and their care. Please feel free to discuss openly and honestly. I am very direct in letting you know about any issues during the day and how they have been addressed.
I am happy to answer all questions about your child including nap times, food, mood, diapers, development, and activities.
Drop-off and pick-up times are generally not the best times to discuss lengthy issues pertaining to your child as I am focused on the other children and I wish to give you my full undivided attention. Please arrange a time to call me in the evening, during nap time or send an email if there is something you wish to discuss in detail.
It is the parent’s responsibility, in conjunction with their healthcare professionals, to ensure their child is meeting developmental milestones.
Please communicate via email with the childcare including outside operating hours to prioritize information concerning your child. For urgent matters including imminent schedule changes or illness please call the childcare at the number provided.
SOCIAL MEDIA
The childcare has a closed Facebook page for parents in the childcare ONLY. Parents who do not wish to have their child’s face in this Facebook group may notify the educator via email. No identifying names or information about the children are used on the childcare’s website.
Recording devices, cell phones, tablets, and location tags are not permitted at the childcare including video and audio monitoring or intercoms for the safety of all the children.
Families are not permitted to take video or pictures of the childcare children during operating hours, including outdoors, for the privacy of all the children.
Please do not private message, direct message, text, or use other forms of social media to contact the childcare. For transparency purposes, please email or phone. This protects and prioritizes private information pertaining to your child.
QUIET TIME/REST PERIOD
All children under the age of four should have a rest period while at childcare. Our quiet window is from 12pm to 3:00pm with nap occurring between 12:30 and 2:30pm.
To avoid disturbing the children who are napping, please do not schedule drop-offs or pick-ups during quiet time.
If it is necessary to pick up your child during quiet time for an appointment please notify me in advance so that I can wake your child and have them ready for your arrival.
I will provide a quiet place for your child to rest. I will provide the crib or cot unless families wish to provide their own. Children are welcome to bring special sleep items that will be kept in their usual sleep space (these will be washed as needed by the Educator). Parents are responsible for providing a crib sheet and blanket. Sheets are washed weekly at the childcare or sooner if needed. Blankets are washed every two weeks or sooner if needed.
MEALS & SNACKS
Well-balanced meals and snacks including whole, natural food will be provided following Canada's Food Guide and applicable licensing requirements. The 4 week rotating menu has been reviewed by a nutritionist.
Please make sure you child eats a full breakfast prior to arriving and is finished eating prior to entering the childcare.
If your child will not be arriving until after the scheduled mealtime, please feed them before they arrive.
Meal times are approximately as follows:
9am: morning snack
11:30: lunch
3pm: afternoon snack
If a child is hungry outside of these times they will be offered a small snack such as a piece of fruit. Water is offered consistently through the day. Juice is not offered.
Plates, cutlery, bibs, cloths, and cups (BPA free) are provided. Items for the microwave are heated in glass containers (no plastic) and served on age-appropriate plates/bowls. Stainless steel (no teflon coating) items are used for cooking.
If there is a particular meal or item you do not wish your child to have (i.e. red meat or dairy) please discuss. Every effort will be made to ensure families do not have to bring meals from home. Families are not encouraged to send food with their children (other than breast milk or formula).
While the childcare strives to meet the need of each child, we cannot guarantee zero exposures to foods or traces of foods that a child may become allergic to. The childcare cannot be held responsible for any complication due to known or unknown food allergies.
TRAVEL AND OUTDOORS
Weather permitting children will be transported by wagon, sled, stroller or walking. Children are generally not taken outside when the temperature is below -10C. In the summer months children are taken out in early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat. We will remain indoors during heat alerts/smog advisories.
Children are expected to come appropriately dressed to go outside EVERY day.
***For hygiene and safety reasons, everyone entering the childcare (children and adults) must wear socks at all times even during the summer months.
Please ensure your child has a properly fitted pair of running shoes with velcro or draw-string straps (no laces, zippers or buckles). Loose sandals (i.e. Crocs) loose boots, flip-flops, slip-ons and other decorative foot wear prevent children from safely participating in the full range of activities offered to them at the daycare. Rain boots and snow boots should be included in the child's weekly bag as the weather changes.
Children enjoy trying to put their own shoes and clothing on when possible.
***Please provide clothing and footwear that can foster independent dressing skills in young children.
POTTY TRAINING
Children do NOT need to be potty trained to attend. I am happy to assist in potty learning when a consistent effort is being made at home. Children must be exhibiting several weeks of child-led success on the potty prior to transitioning to underwear at the childcare for hygienic reasons.
Several sets of extra clothing are required during potty training time. Extra clothes should include loose pants, extra underwear/socks, extra shirts, no overalls, no onesies, no tights, and no pants with buttons.
Potty teaching is always done in a relaxed, positive and consistent manner. Please note the educator is continuing and backing-up existing efforts that have been successful at home. Educators are helpers in the process but it is the parents primary responsibility to ensure their child becomes toilet trained. Rewards and incentives may be given if provided by the parent and they would not cause conflict amoung the children.
**Children who are transitioning toward dry-nap (napping without a diaper or pull-up) will have a waterproof sheet placed under their sheet and should have extra clothes at the daycare.
TOYS AND PLAY
The childcare provides a wide variety of toys, educational material and equipment. Any personal items brought to the daycare (with the exception of nap blankets and comfort items) may be used by any child and the safety of these items can not be guaranteed. It is recommended that no personal items be brought from home unless the child is willing to share, this includes items for show-and-tell or special events.
There is a fully fenced backyard with a variety of outdoor toys that are rotated to ensure children are properly stimulated by activities.
There is a fully finished basement with a large assortment of items including kitchen, trains, balls, books etc. If your child is particularly interested in an activity please let the childcare know. I do my best to acquire items specific to your child's interests!
The main floor is used for eating, crafts, art, group activities, and group play.
Pools, standing water, and trampolines are not used at the childcare.
NO personal electronic devices are permitted at the childcare including iPods, computers, video games, tablets, or cell phones.
Children are not permitted to watch any television or to have any screen time while at the childcare.
BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT
I believe the most effective ways of encouraging positive behaviors are through; Praise, Respect, Re-Direction, and Positive Re-Enforcement. I am not a referee amoung a group of children. I help children to develop tools for their own problem solving. During conflict it is important for children to feel respected, secure and important. They need to know I am always available to listen and help, not to judge their feelings or actions.
My goal is to coach the children so they can negotiate compromise, brainstorm and figure it out together. Kindness and the identification of feelings is always encouraged.
I do not believe in traditional time-outs (where a child is left alone) as I feel it is punitive and takes away from a potential teachable moment. Children are always told what is expected of them and why in an age appropriate manner. Typically positive re-direction and a change in activity will work to move the child away from disruptive behaviour.
I always let the children know I am happy to talk to them at ANY time about ANYTHING that is bothering them and use the practice of acting listening to ensure they feel heard. With younger children this may be as simple as a quiet moment to have a hug and some direct one-on-one attention.
